Previous Impulse Nights

16-04: Where is the money

Poster Impulse night April Small.jpg

Although the creative sector is booming, it's still hard for creative
entrepreneurs to sort out its finances. Some banks are investigating
other possibilities to make financing easier. Art organisations, like
Kunstenaars en Co have different possibilities for artists to apply for
loans. But not only traditional financing institutions, more and more
private investors are engaging with this new market. These Cultural
Maecenases, so to speak, are very influential in the United States and
our expectation is that soon also in the Netherlands and Europe
cultural products and museums will be named after private financers.

Keynote speakers:

Representative from CIDA Huddersfield, Creative Industries Development Agency. A support organisation for the creative and cultural sector.

Best Practice:

Fusien Verloop, from Leenaers en Verloop consultancy, will talk about the upcoming of the Cultural Maecenas in the Netherlands.

Peter van Hintum
, Kunstenaars & Co, will reflect on loans for creative entrepeneurs.

19-03: Pimp my Business: Positioning for Creative SMEs

Poster Impulse night March.jpg

Selling your creative business, or communicating your Unique Selling Point is not an easy task. Often your business doesn't fit into the normal 'profiling' strategies or clusters, nor are there always the right words available to describe your business. According to David Parish, an influential management consultant, we still have to deal with differences between the world of the Suits and the wold of the T-shirts. Or in other words between the traditional market and the creative industries. But there are methods to bridge or deal with this gap and improve your communication patterns, and by means of this enlarge your potential business market.

Keynote speakers:

David Parrish, international management consultant and trainer (http://www.davidparrish.com/) will deliberate on his book T-Shirts and Suits: A Guide to the Business of Creativity is now available for free download CLICK HERE

Best Practice:

Marcel Brosens, Mannen met Plannen. Brosens will speak about positioning your business.

19-02: Creative Clusters

Impulse Night 19-02.jpg

The modern consumer is looking for a mix of pleasure, knowledge and the possibility to expand their (social) network. Cultural or creative clusters, accumulating various activities of the Creative Industries, are therefore very popular. This has been proven in Utrecht by the rise of crossover institutions, such as the Louis Hartlooper Complex (film, culture and debate center), the success of Cultural Sundays and the increase in creative activities in social spaces, such as bars.
Oedzge Atzema, lecturer economic geography at the University of Utrecht, states that clusters are the answer to the experiential economy. Creative clusters provide economic and practical advantages, however mostly, the function of meeting people with likeminded ideas, ambitions and competencies -as long as it is managed well- provides the dynamics for a competitive advantage in the future (Atzema).

Keynote speakers: Tom Fleming, creative consultant in Londen (http://www.tfconsultancy.co.uk), will give an overview of the rise and development of creative clusters in the United Kingdom.

Subsequently, Roy van Dalm, economic journalist and member of the Richard Florida Creativity Group, will go into detail about clusters in the Polish city Lodz.

Best Practices: Remy Harrewijn, founder of Festina Lente (http://www.flonline.nl/) and Andrew Bullen, director of the Media Guild (http://www.mediaguild.com), who will give an insight into the practice of creative clusters.

Moderator: Hans van Dulken, cultural sociologist, associated with the HKU

15-01: Intellectual Property

On our second Impuls Night we put Intellectual Property and creative commons on the agenda. Evert van Gelderen, a rising star within De Gier Stam, law office with a speciality in Intellectual Property Rights, give an overview on how IP works: protection, enforcement and exploitation. Besides he deliberated on the application of IP for products and sectors, including registering, assigning and licensing IP and he mentioned new ways of working with IP in collaborative models such as creative commons.

Theory was put into practice by Evert Hoogendoorn, who recently initiated HKU TV ((http://hkutv.hku.nl/).Hoogendoorn gave an impressive presentation of the ambitions of this digital television station. After that the floor was given to Eef Grob, a projectmanager of 3voor12 (http://3voor12.vpro.nl/plundertmusea/kaft/index.jsp), digital portal of broadcaster of Dutch public broadcast channel VPRO. Grob spoke specifically about a project called Plundering the musea, launched last year, for which the VPRO used the creative commons license.

Prof. dr. Joost Smiers research fellow in the Research Group Arts and Economics concluded this session with a column on the 'sustainability' of copyright.

The discussion was moderated by Bert-Jan van den Akker van Bosselaar & Strengers Advocaten.

18-12: Vital Statistics for Creative SME’s

Keynote speaker: Hugh Mason, Pembridge
